The AK-47 (shortened from Atvomat Kalashnikova 1947) is a gas-operated automatic rifle. It was first designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov, and was originally produced in Russia. It is now the most widely manufactured assault rifle in the world, and over 100 million have been built, in countries such as China, Pakistan, as well as former Communist countries.
The usual calibre is 7.62 x 39mm, however several other variants are available. It is classified as a prohibited firearm in Canada, as it is included on an Prohibited Weapons Order. Therefore, even the semi-automatic variants are generally illegal to own. The cartridge magazines generally hold 30 rounds, and are also prohibited.
